Although Microsoft protects your data against physical disasters (such as a tornado or flood destroying a data center and you losing e-mail mailboxes or SharePoint sites), there are times when data is not actually lost, but data is removed by users and is needed at a later point in time. (I encountered a worst-case-scenario a year ago when I discovered a disgruntled employee had tried to permanently delete a SharePoint library with 10 years of customer data.) While it’s possible to talk to Microsoft about retrieving this information, it often entails overwriting your entire SharePoint site collection or mailbox with point-in-time data and it’s a long and time-consuming process to push that through Microsoft support.
